1. What does  Journal of Tourismology publish?

1.1. Aim and Scope

Before submitting your manuscript to Journal of Tourismology, please review the "Aim and Scope" page of the journal. Research that are not covered by the scope of the journal will be desk rejected.​


1.2. Application Types

The works submitted for publication are first reviewed by the Chief Editor in terms of their purpose, subject, content, manner of presentation and compliance with the writing rules. Submissions should not exceed 9000 words, excluding supporting matierials. JoT basic editorial evaluation criteria are as follows:

(1) Scientific and practical contribution.

(2) Conceptual framework and quality of discussion.

(3) The methodology and conceptual framework used.

(4) Quality and originality of findings.

(5) Discussions and quality of theoretical and practical implications.


1.2.1. Original Article

In the Journal of Tourismology, it is aimed to publish analytical / theoretical studies which reveal the basic problems related to tourism and suggest original solutions. However, in particular research attention is paid to certain aspects:

(a) It is expected that the theoretical framework on which the research is based will be expressed in a comprehensive manner.

(b) It is expected that the research will provide theoretical and practical contribution to the field.

(c) The author(s) is expected to make original contributions to the discipline of tourismology.

(d) It is expected that the work is unique and that the argument presented is consistent.


1.2.2. Research Article

Manuscripts to be sent to the Journal of Tourismology;

(a) be prepared using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research design.

(b) there is an extant literature review and meta-analysis that comprehensively reviews recent literature on the concepts discussed in the paper.

(c) attention to be paid in the proposal of a model that can be practically applied to tourism.


1.2.3. Book Review

Journal of Tourismology also publishes book reviews. Book evaluations should not exceed 1000 words. Published reviews also have DOI (Digital Object Identifier) numbers as in articles, and are submitted to indexes where the journal is included.


2. Editorial Policy

2.1. Peer Review Process

Peer review process -which is shown in Figure- is being followed for assessing the validity and quality of the submitted articles to Journal of Tourismology. Each manuscript is sent to three reviewers. JoT strongly aims to improve the quality of published articles through the peer review process.

As a type of peer review, double blind review is utilized in JoT. The identities of both reviewers and authors are concealed from each other throughout the review. While author anonymity prevents any reviewer bias to happen; the reviewers anonymity stands as one of the priorities of JoT.

2.2. Evaluation Processes

An editorial preliminary evaluation of a submitted work is completed within 30 days. If found suitable the manuscript is sent to three reviewers. The first round of review takes about 2-4 months. This period can be extended due to the workload of the referees in the area concerned.

Authors are expected to address each review in a separate response letter and highlight amendments made on the main document.


2.3. Authors & Co-authors

All persons with a certain level of contribution to the work must be specified as authors. The order of the authors shall not take into account the titles and positions of the authors. For the studies produced from masters and doctoral thesis, the owner of the thesis should be listed as the primary author.


2.4. Acknowledgements

If there are people or institutions that have contributed to the study (such as technical support, data collection, financial support, etc.) other than author(s), they should be listed on the title page.


2.5. Funding

If funding for the study was received, authors need to identify their funding sources.

2.6. Conflict of Interest Conflict

The writers are expected to declare all conflicts of interest relating to their work.


3. Publication Policies

3.1. Broadcast

JoT adopts publishing policy based on academic integrity and ethics. Review our "Committee on Publication Ethics" statement and Istanbul University Publications ethical guidelines.

JoT is publishing according to this declaration of COPE.


3.2. Plagiarism

Istanbul University and Journal of Tourismology; has strict guidelines for copyright, plagiarism and publishing. We constantly investigate plagiarism allegations or abuses to protect the author's rights and respect for the journal. All applications are reviewed by a plagiarism prevention software (i.e. iThenticate) before during and after reviewing process. Similiarity reports should score below 35% and all other ethical guidelines apply. We reserve the right to actively initiate actions on this subject if, as a result of these investigations, we find a problem with an application related to plagiarism, the third party's unauthorized use of copyright, inadequate notification or writing of the article. If these conditions are identified in a published article (i) publishing erratum or corrigendum; (ii) withdrawing the article from the publication; (iii) we may initiate various legal proceedings in the form of notifying the relevant authors' institutions.


3.3. Copyright Policy

Journal of Tourismology Creative Commons is licensed with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Thus, open access is released for public use. However, Istanbul University Press also makes a license agreement with the corresponding author of the work in order to publish the manuscript in full text on various other platforms (web page, databases, indexes, promotion circles etc.).

3.4. Open Access Policy

By "open access" to this journal, we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution and the only role for copyright in this domain should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.

4. Manuscript Format

4.1. General

You can access the Journal of Tourismology's editorial guidelines from the [01_formatting_and_content_requirements_for_manuscripts.pdf].


4.2. Basic Reference Documents

Prepare your work in a word processor program, preferably Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx, etc.).

Journal of Tourismology expects applicants to prepare their applications as two documents (title page, and main text).

Make sure that the elements in your file are large enough to be readable, especially tables and pictures. Certain file formats do not produce high resolution, such as .jpg and .gif; for this reason, use .tif format when recording your images.

Give the document a simple name. Do not use special characters, punctuation marks, symbols in the file name; Be careful not to leave spaces in the file name.

Please send additional documents (scale form, original data set, etc.) that you think are useful to the editors or referees during their review.


4.2.1. Main Text

Please see [04_main_document.pdf] for a sample text on the structure of the main text.

Important Note: The main document you upload should not contain author names, affiliations or any other information that might identify authors; If the work is produced from a presentation, a report, a thesis, there should be no information about these. Be sure to remove this information from the main document before uploading. Such information should be included on the Title Page.


4.2.2. Title Page

Please review the [title_page] file for a sample text of how the Title Page will look.

All authors should include the following information on the Title Page:

(i) full names

(ii) institutional information

(iii) addresses

(iv) e-mail addresses

(v) acknowledgements


4.3. References

JoT adopts the sixth edition of the Writing Guide developed by the American Psychological Association is preferred. Review the APA Guideline file [02_basic_citation_formats_and_reference_examples.pdf] to find out how to use it in the text.


4.4. Language

Journal of Tourismology accepts manuscipts in English language. All submissions received are first reviewed in terms of language competences before being sent for review. Manuscipts which have major language issues will be sent back to the authors for language correction and editing.


5. ORCID

JoT supports ethical, transparent and fair editorial and referee evaluation process. In this context, Istanbul University supports the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) platform. ORCID matches the researcher's previous activities by assigning a digital ID number to disaggregate researchers. In the articles published in Journal of Tourismology, authors are included with the ORCID numbers. If your ORCID number is not yet available, you can retrieve it here [http://orcid.org/register].


6. Submit the application

Follow the directions below to submit a manuscript to the Journal of Tourismology'online submission system.

7. Publication Process

7.1. After Acceptance

After copyright processes are complete all accepted work is sent to the proofreading and editing.

7.2. OnlineFirst

OnlineFirst is the medium where Istanbul University publishes ready-to-print articles online before the press. In a published article on OnlineFirst, the volume is published with DOI (Digital Object Identifiers) number,.

The article is removed from the OnlineFirst page when it is published, and assigned in a published volume.

An accepted publication is published as OnlineFirst within 30 days.
