A Research on the Qualifications, Authorities and Management Skill Levels Of Managers Of Accommodation Enterprises
Abstract
Due to their structure, accommodation businesses need employees and managers with knowledge and competence in many fields. There are opinions that the presence of employees with tourism education in accommodation businesses will increase the service quality in accommodation businesses. However, it may not be possible for only employees or managers with tourism education to meet the employee demand of accommodation businesses. The fact that employees with tourism education work as effective and influential managers in accommodation enterprises can certainly contribute positively to the improvement of service quality. However, the presence of only employees and managers with tourism education in accommodation enterprises may not meet the needs of managers in other fields. For these reasons, determining the profiles of the managers currently working in accommodation enterprises will contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics of the managers that accommodation enterprises need.
In this context, it was tried to determine the qualifications and competencies of the employees working in managerial positions in accommodation businesses. A questionnaire form was created to determine the manager profile by determining the qualifications and competencies in question. In the questionnaire form, there are questions to determine the characteristics and competencies of managers and questions to determine their management skills. The questionnaire form was sent to the managers of the accommodation establishments constituting the population of the study. Face-to-face questionnaire distribution was preferred in the delivery of the questionnaire form to the managers of the accommodation establishments. In addition, e-mail and online survey applications were also used. The number of 386, which is sufficient to represent the managers of accommodation establishments in Turkey, was determined as the sample. In the sample calculations, the sample size of the research was based on 0.95 confidence level and 0.5 confidence interval. Descriptive analyzes were made regarding the data obtained. The normality of the data was tested and it was determined that the data were not normally distributed. Accordingly, nonparametric difference tests were used. As a result, it was determined that the number of managers with tourism education in accommodation establishments is quite good. On the other hand, it has been determined that managers with education in fields such as medicine, pharmacy, law and architecture are involved as business owners in accommodation enterprises and that these managers have high conceptual skill levels. In addition, it has been determined that the conceptual skill levels of managers with a bachelor's degree in tourism are higher than managers without a bachelor's degree.
