Understanding the Motivation of Tourism Undergraduate Students, Perceived Quality of Education and Their Intentions to Pursue Post-Graduate Education

Öz

With the rapid growth of the tourism sector both nationally and internationally, the need for qualified labor in this sector is increasing. This also raises the need to examine students’ perceptions of tourism education and their perceptions of quality education. The aim of this research is to examine the relationship between the study motivation of tourism undergraduate students, perceived education quality, and the intention to pursue post-graduate degree. For this purpose, survey-based data were collected from tourism undergraduate students. According to the findings, there is a positive and significant relationship between the two dimensions of motivation; the attractiveness of the field and international experience, and perceived education quality. There is also a positive and significant relationship between the perceived quality of education and the intention to pursue a post-graduate degree in tourism. The findings also confirm that the relationship between perceived quality of education and intention to pursue post-graduate education may differ based on gender but not based on whether students were graduated from tourism high school or not. The study proposes various suggestions especially to universities, higher education institutions and sector stakeholders.

Turizm Lisans Öğrencilerinin Motivasyonları, Algılanan Eğitim Kalitesi ve Lisansüstü Eğitime Yönelik Eğilimleri Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Öz

Turizm sektörünün yerel ve uluslararası anlamdaki hızlı büyümesine paralel olarak sektörde nitelikli işgücü ihtiyacında da artış yaşanmaktadır. Bu artışla birlikte turizm eğitimi ve eğitim kalitesi algısı da oldukça önemli görülmektedir. Bu araştırmanın amacı, turizmde lisans eğitimi gören öğrencilerin turizm bölümünü seçme motivasyonları, algılanan eğitim kalitesi ve lisansüstü eğitime yönelik eğilimleri arasındaki ilişkiyi ortaya koymak ve algılanan eğitim kalitesiyle lisansüstü eğitime yönelik eğilim arasındaki ilişkinin cinsiyete ve lise mezuniyetine göre değişip değişmediğini ölçebilmektir. Bu amaçla, turizmde lisans eğitimi gören öğrencilerden ankete dayalı veri toplanmıştır (Etik Kurul Raporu: İstanbul Üniversitesi Sosyal ve Beşeri Bilimler Araştırmaları Etik Kurul Başkanlığı’ndan alınmıştır (2020/155). Bulgulara göre, motivasyonun iki boyutu olan alanın çekiciliği ve uluslararası deneyimle algılanan eğitim kalitesi arasında pozitif yönlü ve anlamlı bir ilişki bulunurken; algılanan eğitim kalitesiyle lisansüstü eğitime yönelik eğilim arasında da pozitif yönlü ve anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmaktadır. Araştırma bulguları algılanan eğitim kalitesiyle lisansüstü eğitime yönelik eğilim arasındaki ilişkide cinsiyetin öğrenciler arasında bir farklılığa yol açtığını doğrulasa da lise mezuniyetinin etkisini doğrulayamamaktadır. Sonuç olarak, bölüm seçme motivasyonunun algılanan eğitim kalitesine ve algılanan eğitim kalitesinin de lisansüstü eğitime yönelik eğilimleri doğrultusunda, çalışmanın özellikle üniversitelere, Yükseköğretim Kurumuna ve sektör paydaşlarına çeşitli öneriler geliştirmesi ve önerilen kapsamlı model ile alan yazına teorik katkı sağlaması beklenmektedir.
